History of White Willow
History of White Willow
A long time resident of White Willow will be guest speaker at the April meeting of the Grundy County Historical Society.
Ron Severson, Grundy County Board Chairman, will speak to members and guests of GCHS at 7pm Tuesday April 22 at the Museum 510 W. Illinois Ave.
He will tell of the establishment of the town of White Willow in order to have a post office there. One prerequisite of having a post office in any town was to have it listed on an IL map.
There was a store built where the post office was located, a blacksmith shop and a school at White Willow, two miles east of IL 47 on White Willow Road. At the demise of the town, the school and the store were developed into residential homes that still remain at there.
Severson’s relatives were instrumental in developing the area, along with several other local families.
When the town was disbanded, the area went back to farmland.
The public is invited to attend GCHS’s meetings and programs.
The Museum’s 5th Anniversary open house will be celebrated from 5-8pm, May 6th.
Many activities are planned for that night including speakers at various locations in the building. Members of all clubs, organizations, government and the general public are invited to this milestone event. Please call the museum for an invitation, 815-942-4880.
New members and guests are always welcomed.
